Thank you all so much for commenting! I love it! Coach Paul--the negative splits---does that mean we did Fartlets?! Hahahahaha! I'm just sooo ready to run this marathon and conquer so many more! Watch out Captain Insane-O, I may end up trying to run 100 marathons too! LOL

Good luck to all of you. Be glad you are strong, injury free and healthy. If someone asks why you run, think back to when you were not a runner. The answer is easy. I hope to be out there running again soon.Hope to see you there. Hawk

There's a very interesting article on marathons in the new issue of Men's Health (the one with Obama on the cover). It should probably be required reading for you runners out there. I've yet to find a good article in Men's Health though, on eating Krispy Kremes, but hope springs eternal! ;-) Great blog --- love to read it.

Coach P Congratulations Chera. There was no doubt in MY mind that you (and the rest of us) could do it. We ran negative splits the last couple of miles and you were strong at the end. Remember this marathon stuff is 60% physical and 80% mental. Keep the positive attitude and you will do great in Route 66. You can do this. Piece of cake.

Captain Insane-O! You are one tough cookie! I guess I'm glad that "shadow" was behind you--sort of--in a kinda competitive way...although I think you should have mace or something with you. I'm glad you finished strong, especially since you are pacing the New York Marathon! I have never heard of "sight focus techniques"--but I'm glad I did it--and it came in handy. Whatever works, right? I also used a mantra, but I didn't think it was appropriate to write what I was thinking! Haha! All I know, is I felt good going into the run, and I was not going to let ANYTHING stop me. My goa was not only to finish strong, but finish with Coach Paul...and for the first time I was able to do that. (Insert a happy dance.)It only took months! I'm glad we all finished!! :-)

Great job on Saturday. Your group looked very strong to the end. That Coach Paul is something else! You hit on a very important technique for a marathoner to employ, if you feel weak then trick your mind so you will keep going. Based on my experience for most marathoners, the mind goes out before the body does, with the exception of extreme conditions, i.e. warm weather or illness. Experienced marathoners all use tricks, just in different ways. Some use sight focus techniques (like you) and others use some sort of mantra, i.e. "I am strong". As an example today, I was convinced that my gimpy back was preventing me from going faster, resulting in a sluggish 7 half mile intervals. As I started the last one, a shadow came up from behind me (why I didn't freak when there was a person behind me at 5:30 a.m. and in the dark is yet another topic to explore). A rather fit looking runner, and of course younger, passed me. I focused on following right behind (now look who is stalking who). Being a slightly competitive person, who by the way knew the finish was approaching surged ahead, and finished about 15 seconds faster than any previous half mile. Who knew on this day it would be possible? Happy Running.

Chera - Great recap of our 21 miler. You did awesome and looked really strong! I have a great article on mental games to play while running - I will find it and send it to you. I plan to re-read it before tackling Route 66. Thanks for the donuts!!! - SP
