According to requirements listed by the U.S. Department of Transportation,  every trucker must have a commercial motor vehicle driver's license.

In order to get a license, drivers must pass a series of skill tests and medical evaluations.

The medical certification includes testing for vision and hearing.  Drivers are also supposed to report and chronic problems or diseases that may affect their driving.

Drivers are required to retest every 2 years to renew their medical certificate.

If drivers have more serious conditions, including heart  disease, diabetes or high blood pressure, those drivers are required to renew their medical certificates every year.

I also feel that this was a horrible ACCIDENT. Jail-time will not correct the problem. This was negligent but we are not talking a cell phone usage, or drugs/DUI, just a terrible accident. An injustice to the families and the driver's family. As people get older they do not realize their limitations, however he passed his physicals and has a clean driving record, so he is still driving, but should he have been? The regulating agencies have a duty to determine a drivers capability and they deemed him safe under the current guidelines. In this economy and with social security limits to retire being raised, we will see older drivers and older people working longer than they should just to survive. I feel for the driver who was just trying to make a living and I feel for the families who have suffered intolerable loss but I have no sympathy for our systems who should be regulating the process better.

BTW, I consider this an accident. That's my whole point about not letting older people behind the wheel. I really doubt this was intentional. Come one.

I don't want to hang the semi-driver, but after age 65 (I have proposed this many times) I believe ALL drivers should have to take the actual driving part of the test each time they renew their license. I am very glad to know that ALL truckers have to get their health checked every 1 or 2 years. At 76, though, few people have any business driving even a car, especially at hwy speeds. Their reaction time is far worse than that of younger people. The idea of letting a 76 year old man behind the wheel of a big rig is simply insane. Besides, he should have retired 10 years ago!

you say that until you reach 65, I would be willing to bet that when you reach 65 we will find you driving a car, truck, or what ever. The statement you made about drivers 65 and over can be considered age discrimination. it was an accident until the investigation says otherwise. People should be praying for all involved instead of trying to find a way to hang the driver of the semi.

I am a truck driver and i feel that drivers after the age of 65yrs old should not be driving a semi or any other vehicle. they are just an accident waiting to happen.
