Last night the city council voted on ways to avoid a possible 6-million dollar deficit by July 1st.
The council voted to eliminate jobs and increase some utility rates.
We’ve received some questions about the city’s budget shortfall and who’s to blame.
Tonight, FOX23’s Emily Sinovic tells us what she found out.
The city and the city manager Jim Twombly gave a few big reasons for the budget shortfall: The bad economy causing a drop in sales tax revenue, a big increase in personnel a couple years ago, and raises for some personnel. So Emily started asking questions, after hearing some of your questions:
The following is one email we received:
“Lay offs heading to Broken Arrow that will effect public safety. This is all resulting from City Manager Jim Twombly over spending and then guessing what next years revenues will be.”
Tuesday night night, union officials in Broken Arrow said they had some questions about the city’s money management:
Captain Greg Sipes, with Broken Arrow Police, said, “I think there’s a lot of other areas of the city where we could look at spending that hasn’t been managed properly.”
So Emily took a close look at the city manager Twombly… and his reasons for the budget shortfall.
