Two homes caught fire around three Tuesday morning, as flames were fanned by high winds. This happened in the 200 block of S. 181st E. Ave.
When firefighters arrived, they found flames shooting from the roof of one home. A woman and her two teenaged sons made it out safely; although one of the boys suffered burns to his hands while trying to put out the fire. He was treated by EMSA on the scene and is expected to be okay. Their home is a total loss.
Strong winds pushed the flames to the house next door, which also caught on fire. That family made it to safety, but their home has some damage.
Firefighters continued to stay on the scene to keep an eye out for hot spots. The Red Cross is also helping the family whose home was destroyed with a place to stay and other needs.
Investigators are trying to determine how the fire started, although the call originally went out as a garage fire.
