Broken Arrow police say a registered sex offender tried to sexually assault a 14-year-old girl on her way to school.
Peter Nolan is in jail facing charges of lewd molestation and lewd proposals to a minor under 16.
Police tell FOX23 the girl was cutting through a park near the 2500 block of West Fulton on her way to school on Thursday morning when Nolan grabbed her and told her to perform a sexual act on him.
The girl got away and ran to school where she called police.
She gave officers a very good description of her attacker and within a few minutes officers canvassing the area found Nolan and took him into custody.
Nolan is a registered sex offender, he was convicted in 2007 of sexual battery on a person over the age of 16.
Police are calling this girl a hero, not only because she saved herself, but because of how she handled the situation.
"She escaped, she immediately told someone, she had a very good description of what this person looked like, his clothing," said Cpl. Leon Calhoun of the Broken Arrow Police Department.
"It gives us a better opportunity to actually find the person we're looking for, and get this person off the streets. And who knows, if she had not said anything he may have been waiting here for the next victim."
Calhoun pointed out this is a good reminder of those things we all learn as kids, stranger danger, the importance of strength in numbers, and always being aware of your surroundings.
Police tell FOX23 Nolan lived just blocks away from two schools and a park despite being a registered sex offender because he was grandfathered in when a law prohibiting him living that close to areas such as these was passed.
