A man is in jail tonight after police found a portion of a woman’s ear in his pocket.

Police were called to an apartment complex near Interstate 44 and South Yale around 1:15 Friday morning.

Officers arrested Joseph Sidney Hall, Jr., 24, for kidnapping, maiming, domestic assault and battery against his ex-girlfriend and obstructing police.

The victim’s friend told FOX23 News she saw her friend hours before the attack and she had no idea her friend would be in danger.

"We were just laughing and talking last night at 11:00," said the friend.

She is afraid of Hall so she didn’t want to release her identity.

"I believe she was helpless," said the friend.

Her friend was helpless against the suspect who viciously attacked the mother of his son.

The victim was beaten from head to toe. Police said Hall tortured his ex-girlfriend.

Arrest reports showed she, "had contusions on her face, head, torso, arms and legs.”

Her ribs were broken and she had a collapsed lung.

The report also showed she, “had several bite marks on her body and a portion of her right ear had been cut or torn off.”

"I want her to get healed and I want her to be safe,” said the friend.

When police arrested Hall they found a portion of the victim’s ear in his pocket.

"It melts my heart for her and I want to her to get better,” said the victim’s friend.

Hours before the attack the victim’s friend said there were no signs of trouble.

"I had no clue that he was mad she just came over to use my phone,” said the victim’s friend. “She is very quiet, very nice and I just wish she would have found her voice."

Police said the victim was held against her will but was able to escape and call for help. She is still recovering in the hospital.

Hall does not have prior domestic violence cases. He is being held on $300,000 bond.
