A Craig County doctor is charged with manslaughter for allegedly prescribing a lethal amount of prescription pain pills to a nursing instructor.

Dr. Mickey Ray Tyrrell is accused of prescribing more than 800 demerol pills and 60 Oxycontin pills to Tammy Dawn Daniels between June 1st, 2009 and August 28th, 2009. Daniels died of a demerol overdose in September of 2009. Court records show Daniels was also getting prescriptions for hundreds of other pain pills by another doctor.

Court records show Tyrrell admitted to prescribing the pain medication to treat Daniels' interstitial cystitis. Tyrrell says he was not aware she was getting pills from another doctor.

Tyrrell is charged with one count of 2nd degree manslaughter.

I knew Ms Daniels, she was not just an RN but an instructor as well. She taught us about drug interactions as well as patients who seek medications. Chronic pain and addiction unfortunately go hand and hand. Yes he made documentation errors. He was penalized by the licensure board and the family is suing as well. However she knew what she was doing and chose not to take the medications as prescribed. If I get prescribed 10 pills or 100 I'm taking them as prescribed. She was having her wages garnished 2 days before her death and had a gambling addiction as well as about 50,000 in credit card debt she had hidden from her family. Ultimately wether it was accidental or deliberate, she crushed and shot the meds. Healthcare professionals know the risks. Personal Responsibility People!!!

Dr. Tyrrell has been my doctor for a number of years, and I also have a chronic pain disorder and am on a lot of pain killers and nerve meds. I think when you are in agonizing pain all the time you think about ending it just to get out of the pain and I don't think if that is what she did it is at all his fault. He cares, that is more than you can say about most doctors in our small county. She was a nursing instructor she teaches other nursing hopefuls how to administer medications, she knew how to take the medication!
